Day 4: 21st April
We depart Katherine and make our way to the Adelaide River War Cemetery. Adelaide River is the site of the only Australian war cemetery on Australian soil. There are 432 servicemen and 63 civilians, all of whom died as a result of Japanese bombing raids, buried in the cemetery. For lunch we arrive at the famous Humpty Doo Hotel, then we step aboard the Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruise. See powerful saltwater crocodiles as they propel themselves high out of the water to snatch their prey. Day 5: 22nd April
We have an early start today, as we are heading to the Tiwi Islands for a full days touring. The ferry ride takes around 2 hours, so sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery as we arrive on Bathurst Island. Here we meet our local guide for a journey through the progressive Aboriginal community of Wurrumiyanga. Visit the Culture Museum with its fascinating displays of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi 'dreamtime' stories as well as visiting the Mission Precinct with its unique Catholic Church. Day 6: 23rd April
Today we take in sights of Darwin. Many people aren't aware of the importance of Darwin during World War II, so we'll look at the city as it is today and also learn about the involvement and history of the bombings of Darwin. The present city centre was established in 1869 and contains many of its remaining historic buildings such as the Old Court House and Government House. We return to our hotel for some free time and we can walk to the local shops and purchase lunch and have a look around. Late afternoon we will be heading to the Stokes Hill Wharf with a visit to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Bombing of Darwin tourist facility - two iconic stories in one iconic location! Whilst here we join the Spirit of Darwin for a sunset dinner cruise on Darwin Harbour. We will see the Darwin skyline from a totally different perspective while enjoying an interesting commentary and dinnerB, D
Day 7: 24th April
Following breakfast, we head to Crocosaurus Cove located in the heart of the city. It has the largest display of Australian reptiles in the world, a two storey fresh water aquarium, a turtle sanctuary, local NT Aboriginal Art and Culture displays. Following some free time to purchase lunch, we make our way to Aquascene. Since the early 1950s a unique and natural phenomenon occurs on the high tide amongst the tranquil tropical waters of Darwin's Doctors Gully. Hundreds of friendly local wild fish swim to the shallow shoreline in search of a gratuitous meal of fresh bread. Over the course of this enduring 60 plus year tradition, the fish have shed their normal shyness and are willingly hand-fed to the delight of thousands of fascinated locals and tourists every year. Aquascene was established in 1981 and has become a magical attraction that we can all enjoy - but you may have to get your feet wet! Late afternoon we are off to the Mindil Beach Sunset Market - it is a major social event and this fabulous local market offers over 200 stalls with nearly 60 food stalls from more than 30 different countries. With the multi-cultural background of Darwin, we are sure to be tempted by some delicious food and smells as we explore the market! Dinner is at our own expense this evening. At a pre-arranged time, we transfer back to the hotelB
Day 8: 25th April
This morning we will be heading to the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Darwin Cenotaph - one of the most significant war memorials in Australia. It is located on the site from which the guns of the 14th Anti-Aircraft Battery went into action, firing, arguably, the first shots ever in the defence of Australia on Australian soil. It overlooks the Darwin Harbour, where so many died in the Japanese air attack on 19 February 1942. The dawn service is a short walk from our hotel and we will return for our breakfast, then make our way to watch the Anzac Day Parade through the streets of Darwin. At the conclusion of the parade the remainder of the day is free for personal sightseeing, or to recover from our early morningB
